Ivan Schierling’s passion for woodworking could be traced at an early age. Having roots grown under his grandfather’s watchful eye as a grade schooler, Ivan soon learned to love being in the workshop doing small wood projects in Middle School. Something about working with his hands and creating things out of wood inspired his creativity and sense of worth. His growing passion and hobby grew through college courses and workshops. In 2008, he became entranced with Japanese carpentry, working as a student with Jay Van Arsdale, Paul Discoe, and Dale Brotheton, all well known carpenters in the unique niche of Japanese woodworking in the US. The lessons and skills learned from his teachers, imprinted much of Ivan’s current designs and way of approaching projects.
